Course Overview

Volunteers are the foundation of any thriving ministry—but attracting, equipping, and engaging volunteers is harder than ever. In this church leadership online training course you’ll discover how to connect passion and purpose and, in the process, find and retain volunteers who are a joy to lead. Using Group’s proven L.I.F.E. volunteer equipping strategy (Look, Invite, Familiarize, Encourage), you’ll learn how to discover, recruit, train, and retain the volunteers your ministry needs. You’ll also master key volunteer management skills: placing volunteers in the right roles, redirecting volunteers who aren’t in their sweet spot, and firing volunteers who need to go. This training will equip you to shift from “getting warm bodies” to engaging people in vibrant, satisfying, effective ministry.

Module 1. Why People Want to Volunteer—But Not for You

People today want to volunteer, but they may be staying away from service opportunities at your church. In this church leadership training course, explore the needs of today’s volunteers and how to connect them to ministry.

Module 2. Recruitment Methods That Do and Don’t Work

Forget volunteer recruitment methods that are ineffective and cause people to run when they see you coming! Understand more productive ways to get people on board with a proven formula for success, using the L.I.F.E. strategy.

Module 3. The L.I.F.E. Strategy: Look

The goal of volunteer placement is to have the right person in the right role. Learn how to look for the qualities needed before recruiting someone to serve.

Module 4. The L.I.F.E. Strategy: Invite

The number one reason people volunteer is because someone asked them! You’ll learn how to invite someone to a ministry role…in just 90 seconds! Discover what to do if someone tells you “no” and how a “no” today could be a “yes” at another time.

Module 5. The L.I.F.E. Strategy: Familiarize

Volunteer training is the most effective way to increase retention. In this church leadership curriculum, discover how to equip your volunteers for successful ministry.

Module 6. The L.I.F.E. Strategy: Encourage

People don’t volunteer because they want to be thanked…but they often quit because they don’t feel appreciated. In this church leadership online training course, learn the difference between recognition and affirmation, and how to do both.

Module 7. Getting the Right Fit

Redirecting volunteers to other roles, or even firing them, is a reality for every ministry leader. We’ll show you the steps to take and how to make it happen. All with grace and dignity!

Module 8. Doing L.I.F.E.

Equipped with new skills from the L.I.F.E. strategy, you’re ready to approach volunteer recruitment with a relational approach that will yield an increase in the number of people serving at your church.
